Responsibilities | ||
Major Responsibilities | Prepare sections of human tissue for microscopic examination and patient diagnosis, using techniques such as grossing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and mounting. – Examine slides and blocks to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. – Exercise independent judgment in resolving procedural and technical problems. – Train or direct Laboratory Assistants and Histology Technicians in laboratory testing and processing techniques. – Maintain and track routine maintenance and quality controls of laboratory equipment. – Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all departmental rules, policies, and procedural manuals. | |
Regular Responsibilities | Receive Histopathology and Cytology specimens according to SOPs. – Operate computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate tissue specimens with wax for preservation. – Operate, clean, and sterilize laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstations. – Prepare slides and blocks of cytology specimens and stain them according to SOPs. – Dispose of hazardous chemical waste in compliance with regulatory guidelines. – Label requisitions, specimen containers, cassettes, and slides. – File, retrieve, and distribute blocks, slides, and pathology reports. – Teach students and orient new personnel. | |
Periodic Responsibilities | Perform grossing of small specimens and assist in fixing large specimens under supervision. – Assist the pathologist in grossing large specimens. – Monitor and conduct control checks on laboratory policies, procedures, and equipment. – Utilize medical terminology effectively to communicate with laboratory staff. – Demonstrate proficiency in using computer programs and applications for laboratory operations. – Perform a full range of laboratory tests and operate various laboratory instrumentation and equipment. – Follow oral and written instructions accurately. – Communicate clearly and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies. | |
